In college, his heroics were as dramatic as they were improbable. In fact, in Jackie Robinson’s first-ever baseball game with UCLA he had four hits and four stolen bases, swiping home on two of them. He broke records in track and field and set the record for most yards per carry in football, averaging 12.2 yards per carry. On the hardwood, he blazed up and down the basketball court, averaging a dozen points a game. With over 120 national champions in UCLA history across sports, the 5-foot-11 Robinson stood out. He became the tradition.
Pioneer? Revolutionary. Unprecedented? Jackie became the precedent — the gold standard for UCLA gold and blue. Courageous? He personified the very word. Nothing was going to stop him, and nothing ever did.
